The sky was dark that night, stars were few and the moon was weak. The night seemed lifeless and by the breath of the wind, you could clearly perceive that rain is coming. We were camping at the public land of Northwestern part of North Carolina. There were five of us, my husband Gavin, my brother Patrick, and my two sons Warner and Carl. It was a night to remember as I could say. We were camping that night, it was our first camping as a family actually. Patrick and Gavin already got their license or permission for a deer hunting days before and they are planning to do hunting that dawn. It was 8:00pm and we were around the bonfire eating our dinner. There, we talked, laughed and sang out loud until we heard a howl on the other mountain. We were silent for seconds until we could hear another howls. It was creepy though hearing all the wolves howling as if shouting that they’re hungry and they need us for dinner. Then there came multiple howls, I was afraid but it made me smile as to the thought that they are singing. As if they are chanting something for the night. When I was about to get up to get my camera, I was amazed as the sky cleared out and the moon appeared so bright. I hurriedly called the boys’ attention and we were there spending almost ten minutes gazing the terrible brightness of the moon. “It was the wolves!” Shouted Warner, I stared at him, and stared to Gavin, we were staring each other until Gavin widen his eyes and uttered, “Ok. That’s creepy.” It was really creepy, the wolves howled like they were telling the moon to wake up. And just by thought of it, the moon did woke up.
That early morning, Gavin and Patrick geared up for hunting. It was almost 9am when they returned and they have three whitetail deers brought with them. It was a great day, but what’s great was when we heard the wolves howled. On our way home, we asked some locals if it’s normal to hear wolves every night, and they just said that they haven’t heard wolves howling for almost 2 years, and that we were too lucky to hear it. It was Singing to the Moon as they called it.
